Highlights

The Cala was borne out of Lamborghini’s desire to create a new entry-level supercar to replace the aging Jalpa.

The name of the striking concept was derived from the Piedmontese dialect of Northern Italy and literally meant “look, over there!”

It was designed by Italian design house Italdesign, one of the most notable names in the world of automobile design.

The Lamborghini Cala was a fully functioning prototype, and several journalists got to drive it.

The Cala was the cover car for the 1997 Need for Speed II video game

Ultimately, Lamborghini (under Volkswagen ownership) killed off the Cala, but it did lay the foundation for the Gallardo, a supercar that would go on to be one of the brand’s most successful models.
